Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line): Stations, Fare, Route Map, Status, & Timeline

Mumbai Metro

One of the first fully underground metro corridors in the city is Mumbai Metro Line 3, which is also referred to as the Aqua Line. A total of 27 stations are located along the line, where 26 stations will be underground and 1 station at grade.  It is around 33.5 km in length and is designed to connect the southernmost point of Mumbai, which is Cuffe Parade, to the western suburb of Aarey Colony. To alleviate congestion on the city’s overcrowded road and rail infrastructure, the Mumbai Urban Transport Project includes this high-capacity metro system as an essential component.

MMRDA granted autonomy of the line to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) to speed up the construction process and maintenance of the metro line. The Metro Line 3 project is being implemented by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL).

The construction work on the corridor commenced on 21st October 2016; however, it faced many legal disputes, which caused significant delays in the work. The Authorities eventually began construction activities at full scale on 18th May 2017.

The initial deadline for completing the Metro Line 3 project for phase 1 was 2021. However, due to the metro car shed issue, the project has been impacted severely, resulting in a cost escalation of over 10,000 crore.

As per the initial plan, the Metro Line 3 project was divided into two phases. The first phase (Bandra–Seepz) was planned to be completed by December 2021, and the second phase (Bandra-Kurla Complex – Colaba) by June 2022. Based on the previous plan, the entire stretch was expected to be operational by 2022.

An extension of the line has also been proposed to extend the line by 2.5 km to Navy Nagar from Cuffe Parade. As per the initial plan, Cuffe Parade was planned to be the first station of the line; however, after the extension, the first station will be Navy Nagar. There are 27 stations planned earlier, which will be 28 stations on the line after the extension is approved. The extension on metro line 3 will cost an additional ₹2,301 crore.

The Metro Line 3 corridor has 27 stations – Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CSMT, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhivinayak, Dadar Metro, Shitala Devi Mandir, Dharavi, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Bandra Colony, Santacruz Metro, CSMI-Airport – T1, Sahar Road, CSMI-Airport – T2, Marol Naka, MIDC-Andheri, SEEPZ and Aarey Colony (at Grade Level)
